When a wisdom tooth should come out
- It keeps swelling or getting infected at the back of the mouth
- It has only partly come through and traps food, which leads to decay
- It is pushing against the tooth in front and damaging it
- It has a cavity that cannot be restored well so far back
- A cyst or other problem has formed around it
An impacted tooth is one that is stuck under the gum or bone, or growing at an angle. Pain near the back of the jaw, a bad taste, or trouble opening your mouth wide are the usual signs.
What happens on the day
- The area is numbed with local anaesthetic, so you feel pressure but not pain.
- A tooth that has fully come through can often be lifted out simply.
- An impacted tooth may need a small cut in the gum, and the tooth may be taken out in sections.
- Stitches are placed if needed, and you bite on gauze to help a clot form.
Healing at home
Swelling usually peaks over the first two days and then settles. Cold packs on the cheek help on the first day. Stick to soft, cool food, and do not smoke, drink through a straw or spit forcefully, because these can dislodge the clot. Warm salt-water rinses are usually started from the next day.
Risks to know about
The most common problem is dry socket, a painful spot that appears a few days later when the clot is lost. Infection can also happen. Lower wisdom teeth sit close to a nerve, so the X-ray is checked for this before removal, and numbness of the lip or tongue, though uncommon, should be reported. Call the clinic if pain gets worse after day three, or if swelling keeps growing.

Frequently asked questions
Does wisdom tooth removal hurt?
The area is numbed, so the procedure itself should not hurt. Expect soreness and some swelling for a few days, which painkillers advised by the doctor usually manage.
How long until I feel normal?
Most people are back to normal routines within a few days. A harder removal can take up to a week or so to settle.
Should I remove a wisdom tooth that does not hurt?
Not always. If the X-ray shows it is healthy and not harming anything, it can often be left alone and watched.
Can both wisdom teeth come out at once?
Sometimes. It depends on how the teeth are placed and how you would prefer to recover, so talk it through at your visit.
